As we prepare for release of the 2019/20 budget there is a sense of anticipation that this budget will be a defining moment for the Labour Coalition Government’s relationship with integrated schools. This is not the first time in the history of APIS that we have found it hard to have a close working relationship with the Minister of Education but that distance has usually softened over the first two years of office.
The Budget for 2020 has a number of expectations for integrated schools around Policy Two funding. Most of these expectations have been strongly supported by Ministry staff because they recognise the value that the integrated networks bring to New Zealand Schools and because any new capacity will alleviate the stress that their own network is under from population pressure.
In 2018 Education Minister Chris Hipkins was asked at the meeting of Proprietors in Wellington if it was likely that he would support the establishment of any new integrated schools during his time in office. He expressed his support for that. It is now time for him to show that commitment was genuine.
APIS will meet with Associate Education Minister Jenny Salesa at its conference in Wellington in June and we look forward to growing that relationship and to her continuing support for integrated schools. I hope to see many of you at the same event and be ready to enjoy that conversation with the Minister.
Ngā mihi nui,
