There are a number of items that we draw to your attention in the latest Lighting New Fires.
APIS is waiting to see the final recommendations to the Minister in the Schooling Futures- stronger together report before taking any further action. Bali Haque indicated that the committee would review those aspects that related to Integrated Schools and ensure that the recommendations did not breach government commitments in terms of Part 33 of the Education Amendment Act 2017.
Advice has gone out regarding the protection of documents which might be requested by the Commission in abuse in state and religious institutions. Principals should ensure that they have considered the advice and have protected documents.
Teachers Council are looking to work with a number of schools to trial their electronic registration system. Our Deputy CEO, Carol Coddington will be approaching a number of schools to see if they wish to participate in the trial.
The office recently farewelled Siobhan Dilly from her role as Policy Anyalyst and Special Projects manager. Siobhan was instrumental in updating the publications at NZCEO and had a key role in organising the Catholic Education Convention in 2018. While NZCEO is sad to farewell Siobhan, we are supportive of her new role as Executive Officer at the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference.

Teaching Council Podcast: Myth Busting the Process of Appraisal
The Teaching Council has released the first episode of their Teaching Today podcast series for 2019 to all teachers. This episode was a myth busting special, aimed at demystifying the process of appraisal.
Feedback on the podcast has been postitive with comments such as “Teachers are indeed very busy and if you support us it makes us feel you value us in the sector”, “The podcast was incredibly helpful, I’m going to make sure that all the teachers at our school get to listen to it” and “Some really good info here!”.

Vision for the Education Workforce 2032
During 2018 and 2019 APIS has been involved in a cross sector reference group (Education Workforce Strategy Group) that has been asked to set the focus for workforce strategy that will address the needs of all the workforce by 2032. The reference group has developed a mahi that will continue to evolve but it has chartered a course for us to work on.
Over the next ten years the nature and demands of the workforce will continue to evolve as society and technology impact on education.
Unions have continued to press the immediate concern about workforce and conditions throughout the discussion and this is recognised. However the purpose of this work is to set up the strategies for a better managed and reactive workforce that can deliver the results expected.

Preparing Ten Year Property Plans
A Proprietor recently enquired if they were required to use the people the MoE had listed as being approved by them.
Proprietors are free to chose who they employ to prepare the plans. The most important point to remember is that if audited the MoE will be looking for a robust plan that is comparable to the standard provided for their own schools.
Proprietors are free to use the use the MoE recommended consultants and this would bring a measure of assurance to the Moe but there is not expectation or requirement to do this.
Congratulations to Students and Teachers
We wish to highlight the sporting and academic success including good news stories of all state-integrated schools, so please forward your newsletters, or news items about your school to nzceooffice@nzceo.org.nz so they can be included.
